WINTER LECTURE PROGRAMME 2008-2009

All lectures are held at The Blackbourne Hall in Elmswell.

They start at 2.30 pm and generally finish by about 4.00 pm. There is an entrance fee of £2 for non-members.

1st November 2008 Late Medieval Enclosure
– Nick Amor will talk on the extent and significance of field enclosure in the late Middle Ages, with particular reference to his study of Thorney near Stowmarket

6th December 2008 From Cropmarks to Concrete:
Suffolk’s coastal archaeology as visible from the air – Sarah Newsome will present an overview of the archaeology of the Suffolk coast, from prehistoric times to the 20th century, as visible from aerial photographs and recorded during a joint English Heritage and Suffolk County Council project.

10th January 2009 Continuity and Change in Suffolk 1349 to 1500:
The Black Death and its Aftermath – Mark Bailey will present evidence for Suffolk’s economic triumph in this period of change which is a theme of his recent book on Medieval Suffolk.

14th February 2009 The Silver of the Iceni
– Megan Dennis will talk on Iceni silver and coins based on the results of her research.

14th March 2009 The Restoration of a Regency Gem
– Anna Forrest and Christine Sitwell of the National Trust will tell the story of the restoration of the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds.

Council will meet after the lectures on 1st November, 10th January and 14th March.

Ornamental pendant from the burial of a lady in the Saxon cemetery beside the River Gipping at Boss Hall, Sproughton. Now on display at Ipswich Museum.

Ipswich Ware pottery. Made in Ipswich in the 7th to 9th centuries and used all over East Anglia, while many examples are found as far away as London and York.
